Facebook has started rolling out a redesign for Facebook Pages. Facebook Pages are designed for companies and brands to create an official presence on Facebook. With the new design, the Pages look more like regular Facebook profiles and there have been many useful features for Page owners added. The following are the top 3 features that will help you leverage your company’s Facebook Page.
1. Become the Page
The top new feature, undoubtedly, is the ability for Facebook Page owners to use Facebook while representing the Page. This means, if the Page owner chooses, his/her post comments on other people’s profiles, Pages and Groups will appear as being written by the Page instead of his/her own personal profile.
What this means for your business:
- There is more opportunity to reach out to key influencers and customers while increasing the exposure of your brand.
- Caution: the rules of online engagement apply. You need to tread carefully and not abuse this new feature. Otherwise, you risk being perceived as a spammer, which can hurt your brand.
2. Photos
The redesign has made Page photos much more prominent by positioning them at the top of the Page’s Wall.
What this means for your business:
- The importance of uploading new photos on a regular basis has increased. You do not want dated and static pictures on your Page.
- This gives increased opportunity to brand the Wall page. The added image “real estate” provides more options for making the Wall tab unique and on brand. Leave it to your imagination.
3. Additional Page Settings
The redesign provides additional settings for Page owners to better control their Page. For example, Page owners can now easily change the Page’s category and name (NOTE: a Page’s name can only be changed if there are fewer than 100 people who Like it).
New settings also allow Page owners to specify keywords to block from the Page’s comments. There is also a Profanity Blocklist to allow Page owners to select a desired profanity filter level.
Finally, there is an option for Page owners to receive email notifications about new posts or comments on the Page. This is great for monitoring purposes because providing timely responses is important when engaging people online.
What this means for your business:
- The increased level of control will help you manage your Facebook Page more efficiently.
- The increased level of spam control will help ease concerns about undesirable comments appearing on the Page.
So what are you waiting for? Start experimenting with all the new buttons on Facebook.

Facebook Privacy Settings
Consumers’ perceptions of a company include their perception of a company’s executives and employees. Facebook and many other social networks, are built on open sharing and genuine conversations. Although personal profiles are not meant for business purposes, these profiles still influence how a person is perceived online. For those who do not want to mix business with their personal lives, Facebook, in particular, has a series of settings to help you control how open your personal profile is to the world.
Facebook’s privacy policy, user interface and controls have changed a lot in the past year. Here is a quick guide to help you set up your account the way you want it.
- Go to www.facebook.com and log in.
- Click on “Account” (located near the top right corner) and select “Privacy Settings” in the drop down menu. This is the first page of privacy settings you can change.
- Under the “Sharing on Facebook” section, click the “Customize settings” link to customize your settings.
- After customizing your settings, go back to the “Privacy” page.
- Next, under the “Basic Directory Information” section on the “Privacy” page, click on the “View settings” link (located at the end of the paragraph). This page will allow you to customize what information you want to appear on your public directory profile. NOTE: Your name, profile picture, gender and networks are always open to everyone.
- After customizing your settings, go back to the “Privacy” page.
- Next, if you do not want your public profile to appear in search engine listings at all, under the “Applications and Website” section (located near the bottom right of the “Privacy” page), click on the “Edit your settings” link.
- Click the “Edit Settings” button located right of the “Public search” item. Make sure the “Enable public search” item is un-checked.
There you have it. The settings are scattered about on Facebook, but using this guide allows you to control your privacy on Facebook. Well, some of it anyway.
